MAU (meaning ‘to dance’ in Japanese) celebrates the 40th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation as it showcases the rich tapestry of Asian dance tradition

MAU weaves a dance fabric with the vibrant colors of Kelantanese dance from Malaysia, stylized Mindanao dance from Philippines, Balinese traditional dance from Indonesia, Japanese kabuki dance, and the Chinese liyuan opera from Singapore. Choreographed and directed by Fujima Kanjuro VIII, the Grandmaster of the 300 year old Fujima School of Kabuki, the dance collaboration is laced with Kabuki leitmotifs to create a multi-layered dance adventure full of elegance and wit.

The measure of how a choreographer speaks volumes is through movement, the constant substance enclosed in a boundary. Through it, the body's versatility is able to integrate different area formulas - body and music, body and literature, body and architecture, body and multimedia.

VOLUME will feature the Premiere of the following Contemporary Dance works of the Airdance resident choreographers: "On This Day" by Fredrick Fernandez, "via-mien" by Jed Amihan, "3 Kisses Mean Goodbye" by Rhosam Prudenciado Jr. & Mia Cabalfin (with video by Ruelo Lozendo & Marc Abaya, music by Marihiko Hara & Polar M), and "Lightning Talks" by Airdance Artistic Director Ava Maureen Villanueva-Ong.
