In|Stall|Ment aims to re-imagine not only the architecture of the body, but also redefine of the dancing space. Sure, "thinking outside the box" has been heard before. This demand on every artist is a tired cliche. But by bringing choreography out of the confines of the studio, the theater, and its usual performance space and shaping it into an entirely different 'box' is the paradox Airdance was hoping for. An old computer shop where nails and wires were still popping out the walls, a noisy hallway, an office after-hours, were the dancers' playground. They vandalized a glass wall with lipstick, hung onto windows, and dared themselves on a staircase. Airdance's In|Stall|Ment site-specific performance meant being subject to the strengths and quirks of the unfamiliar stalls and spaces. The challenge was met with a brave translation of movement onto the given stage. This time around, various venues on the 12th floor of Benilde's SDA building will serve as the staging ground.
In|Stall|Ment was first performed in 2013 in Quezon City with a great reception. Not only did it require strategy on the choreography of the dance itself, but it also meant a manipulation of the audience across the maze of dances. The show was only meant to be experienced to be fully appreciated. But the choice on perception has and always will be with the audience.
For its 2015 staging, In|Stall|Ment is part of the first Fringe Manila Arts Festival which runs from Feb. 12 to Mar. 1, 2015. For more information, visit www.fringemanila.com.
