Paul Morales
Artistic Director
Paul graduated from the University of the Philippines with a BA in Theater Arts, where he majored in directing under the tutelage of Prof. Antonio Mabesa. While in college at 16, Paul started taking dance classes, eventually becoming a scholar at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Dance School and a member of Agnes Locsin‘s original company of Ballet Philippines 2. Paul also became a scholar at the Laban Center for Movement and Dance in London. He graduated from the Advanced Performance Course as a member of the Transitions Dance Company under Sean Green, which toured the United Kingdom, United States and Asia in 1992-1993.
Paul returned to Manila in 1993 and founded Dulaang Talyer (Theater Workshop) a dynamic professional theater company, in which he served as Artistic Director until 2002. Prominent among his numerous works for Dulaang Talyer is the multi-media play “BILOG” (Circle) by Nicholas Pichay, which has been staged four times since its premiere in 1995. The second staging was a grantee of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) as part of the National Arts Festival in 2000. In 2001, BILOG was chosen as the National Capital Region representative - graduating the production to the culminating festival of plays also organized by the NCCA. BILOG also garnered two ALIW Award nominations including Best Play and Best Director. In 2003 BILOG was again staged for the French Spring in Manila and invited to perform at the theater festival in Avignon, France. With the support of the French Embassy in Manila, BILOG was the first Filipino play to perform at this prestigious European festival.
Paul was a member of the Philippine Ballet Theater under Gener Karingal. For Ballet Philippines (BP) Paul has choreographed four ballets, notably ‘Stiletto’, a trio from the critically acclaimed BP production of “SHOES++” directed by Denisa Reyes. Paul has twice been featured as a choreographer for the British Arts Month in Manila; in 1997, and again in 2003.
Paul’s other commissions include works for the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA), Myra Beltran’s Dance Forum, and E-Dance Theater. He also directed the world premieres of Gary Granada’s “Lean”, a musical on the life of slain activist Leandro Alejandro, and the sarswela “Bayan Isang Paa na Lamang”, the last composition of National Artist Lucio San Pedro, written by Melba Maggay. Paul is also a teacher of theater and dance as well as an award-winning filmmaker. Remaining active in the Philippines, he presently works as a dancer, director, teacher and choreographer with the Airdance Company in Quezon City.
