Every year, the world celebrates International Dance Day, to bring everyone together in peace and friendship through a common language – dance. Each Dance Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the power of dance in our lives.
In this year’s celebration we are enjoined to take a step back and celebrate in “open spaces: streets, squares, parks, stadiums, beaches, parking lots, clearings – anywhere under the sky.” Throughout the year, “we teach dance, we rehearse, we perform within four walls.” But “on this special day dedicated to dance, [let us] we mark the difference by practising, teaching or performing for everyone to see. It might be cold and rainy, the floor is certainly not good enough, and the wind takes the music away, but the beauty in those movements and the joy on those faces will brighten the hearts of the spontaneous audience of passers-by.” (from the circular by International Dance Council, CID, UNESCO, Paris)
March 25 and 26, 2011, 8:00 pm

We dance, we declare! Airdance goes out of it comfort zones with its newest adventures in movement and dance. Steering clear from plotless, abstract, free-your-mind-it-is-whatever-you-want-it-to-be pieces, the company confidently presents its stance and position against social injustice with DECLARATION.
Airdance choreographers and dancers will be performing dance compositions inspired by articles from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. People from all over the world are suffering from oppression, hunger, and discrimination. There can’t be a more fitting time to stand up and move against all these. This production is a conscious effort to contradict the notion that artists, dancers especially, have no awareness and concern for the greater good, hence the discrimination against the arts for not having any social relevance. This is a campaign against that discrimination in dance in our society.
We do not promise to bring about world peace, nor can we end starvation but allow us to assert our right to freedom of opinion and expression (be it verbal or otherwise) in the best way we know how, through dance.
DECLARATION will feature Contemporary Dance pieces choreographed by Airdance Artistic Director Ava Maureen Villanueva, Associate Artistic Directors Rhosam Prudenciado Jr. and Jed Amihan, and choreographers Mia Cabalfin, Avel Bautista, Alfred Mercado, Jojo Guzman and Johnny Amar.
For inquiries and reservations, please call 415-2185, or call/text 0916-356-6693.
DECLARATION is co-presented by Airdance and Dance Forum, members of the Contemporary Dance Network Philippines (www.contempodancenetphil.org)
