October 22 & 23, 2005, 8pm
Dance Forum Space, 38 West Ave., Quezon City
Contemporary dance choreographers pay tribute to women poets in celebration of the Centennial of the Feminist Movement in the Philippines in "Ars Poetica," an evening of dance and poetry, on Oct. 22 and 23, 2005, 8pm at Dance Forum Space, 38 West Avenue.
The program is presented by Myra Beltran’s Dance Forum, the National Commission on Culture and Arts, Subcommittee on Culture and the Arts, NGO-GO National Network for the Feminist Centennial in cooperation with Air Dance.
This contemporary dance concert features "high priestess of poetry" Virginia Moreno’s poem "Order for Masks" in collaborative choreography by Myra Beltran, Paul Morales and Bunny Brendia. Ms. Moreno was the only female writer amongst a pioneering and intellectual group of artists, who called themselves the "Ravens". In their work and critique of art practices prevailing in the 1950’s, these artists influenced a generation of other artists. One writer has described Ms. Moreno as "the last bohemian." Each poem of hers is called a "jewel". "Order for Masks" is set in the pre-war Carnival era and its heart is the Woman ordering three masks for the three tasks in her life. Performed by Myra Beltran, Proceso Gelladuga II, Reagan Cornelio and Paul Morales.
The evening also premieres the choreography of Christine Maranan-Novales, Avel Bautista, Donna Miranda, Nina Hayuma Habulan and Elena Laniog - poetry rendered in contemporary dance. Also performing are Vinia Pamplona, Jethro Pioquinto and Vincent Egido. Visual Design by Gio Respall and costume design by Jethro Pioquinto.
"Ars Poetica" -- dance is poetry, and "the body is that place that writes." Tickets are 150 pesos with discounted tickets at 100 pesos for students. For info, contact tel. no. 373-3567.
